Taiwanese Protesters Clash With Police Over China Trade Pact

Tensions are rising in Taiwan after students occupied two government buildings to protest a trade pact with mainland China.

Annie Oakley‘s insight:

The protest in Taiwan has grown more violent after police used a heavy-handed response against the students who have, thus far, been described as peaceful. Protesters were both injured and arrested in the conflict, creating even higher tensions between both parties.

As has been shown throughout history, a violent response to a peaceful protest can both quell a rebellion and ignite further flame. The recent breakdown in the Ukraine is a perfect example of what happens when the government overestimates its powerful influence to the population. Let’s hope that we do not see a mirror situation occur in Taiwan and that the citizens will not have to push beyond peaceful protesting.
